Thorncrest Phase 1

Overview

  • Ward: Etobicoke Centre (Ward 4)
  • Activity: Underground Rebuild
  • Timeline: June - December 2013
  • Status: Completed

Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited (Toronto Hydro) is planning to convert the existing rear lot overhead electrical system to an underground electrical system on the street.

The existing 4kV electrical system is nearing the end of its life expectancy and is set-up in the ‘rear lot’ or backyard of homes. These ‘rear lot’ configurations can take longer to repair and customers may experience longer than normal outages. We are planning to convert this rear lot overhead system to a front lot underground system with the use of above grade pad mount transformers and tap boxes.

The scope of work includes open trenching, micro tunneling excavation, installation of hydro equipment and concrete encased ducts within the City of Toronto’s public road allowance. To connect to the meter base, minor excavation will be necessary on private property to install duct. Throughout our work, we do not anticipate any planned power interruptions. In the event that a planned power interruption is scheduled, Toronto Hydro or our Contractor will provide advanced notice.

Our contractor, Aecon, and Toronto Hydro Inspectors are sensitive to local concerns and will endeavour to minimize disruptions to local residents. Toronto Hydro’s contractor will temporarily restore our area of work. The City of Toronto will make permanent restorations to the city road allowance as season, weather and scheduling permits. Please note that the poles in the rear lot are not owned by Toronto Hydro. Following the completion of the project, Toronto Hydro will remove the electrical equipment located at the top of the pole and will cut the top half of the pole in order to maintain the existing communication lines.
